Who is Brooklyn Smith?

Hi! I’m Brooklyn Smith! I’m a one-person team creating videogames, editing and filming videos, shooting photos, writing code, and creating all sorts of digital media. I’m 22, transfeminine, and a proud, born-and-raised Canadian living in the Ottawa area, though I do plan on exploring the nation and potentially the world at some point. I currently study Interactive Media Design at Algonquin College, with a focus mainly on the web development side of everything.

What do you do?

In my spare time (when I’m not studying or learning), I like to relax by playing video games, working on passion projects like the games I have posted about on this website, and writing small programs for my own personal use in C++ and JavaScript. Given that I am currently a full-time student, I am not employed nor seeking employment as I would like to spend as much time as possible on my studies.

What are your goals?

My goals are pretty simple and run-of-the-mill for the most part. Like any person in the western world, I want to reach a point where money is no longer of concern for me I am able to do what I want when I want to. A key difference from the norm, however, is that I don’t want to hoard my wealth. Should I ever get to the point where I have a sizable amount of disposable income, I want to donate it to various charity organizations to help better the world. It’s a pretty sappy thing that everyone claims they want to do, but I really do mean it. The “why” would take up a whole essay, so I’ll leave that for now. In short: I want to make the world a better place, but I need to focus on my own situation first and foremost.

What do you want to do for work?

What I want to do and what I will do are very different things, and since this question can mean both I will provide both. What I see myself doing is working in web development, preferably back-end coding and maintenance, for some company or corporation that doesn’t really care about me. Truth be told, I would be more than okay with that as long as my salary is worth it. What I really want to do, however, is make videogames. Pretty day-dream-y answer, I know, but I really do. I have all these ideas but nowhere to really put them, and games have always been a medium I have valued immensely. I also love the idea of people across the world playing my game and getting to hear their feedback, both positive and negative. In other words, I want to sit at a desk and give myself Carpal Tunnel.
